St. James is a county seat town with an estimated population of 4,700, located in Watonwan County, with a population of approximately 11,600. We are located 37 miles west of Mankato, about a 35-minute drive; 120 miles southwest of Minneapolis and St. Paul, about a two hour drive.
Financial services include Pioneer Bank, First National Bank, and St. James Federal Savings & Loan. These financial institutions offer full loan services, checking, savings, NOW accounts, ATMs, and many other accounts and services.
Motel accommodations include a newly expanded & remodeled Super 8 Motel on the south interchange of St. James with 60 rooms, and suites with whirlpool hot tub and fireplaces, an indoor pool, with separate hot tub area, new meeting room, and hot breakfasts in addition to continental breakfasts.
For your recreational needs, we have a swimming beach on the west edge of town, on St. James Lake, and adjacent is the recently completed outdoor pool. Included in this completely fenced in area is a wading pool for infants and small children, as well as for sun tanning.

We also have an 8-lane bowling alley and an 18-hole, par 72 golf course, which has been newly expanded to be one of the top courses in the area. We have a racquetball club with two courts, exercise equipment, hot tub and sauna.
Education: St. James School District #840 covers a large rural area, and is accredited by the Minnesota Department of Education. We have 98 teachers, and approximately 1,300 students. The students have above average test scores. The public school pupil/teacher ratio is 17/1 in the Elementary School and 20/1 in the High School. We also have alternative schools for grades 10-12, and a special education school, as well as SWIS (School Within A School) a program for students in transition to a regular class sitting.
